It is with a heavy heart that we inform our friends and neighbors that the property where we house the Phoenix Equine Rescue has been sold. The new owner of the land has a different plan for the property so we have been asked to leave. We currently are scrambling to find a place for all the horses before the end of March. Our hope is to re-build the Rescue on a newly acquired piece of property located on the corner of 65th and 33rd. The property is currently an empty lot, so we will be building from the ground up. Any and all help with supplies, or even manpower would be greatly appreciated.

With beautiful Taylor Mountain as our background, The Phoenix Equine Rescue & Rehabilitation Center gives a second chance to abandoned, abused, neglected, sick and older horses providing them with the care, love and rehabilitation that they need and deserve.

Phoenix Equine Rescue works with local authorities in identifying at-risk animals that need to be removed from an abusive or neglectful situation. Many of these situations are truly sad and some animals come to us with their survival in question. We first focus on restoring these animals to physical good health and then the long journey of helping them establish or renew their trust in human beings begins. The ultimate success for us is being able to place a healthy animal in a new, caring and capable home through our adoption process. Since we were organized in 2004, we have placed 9 animals in new homes; currently, we have approximately 27 horses in various stages of rehabilitation.

We firmly believe that every horse, just like every person can perform a job of some kind, no matter what their limitation, and that they all deserve a second chance. Through education and community awareness, our goal is to reduce and prevent abuse and neglect of horses. The unique nature of horses offers lessons in life to both our young and old volunteers; lesson that promote trust, teamwork, kindness, patience, love and dedication. These special animals can act as a mirror and metaphor for many common human issues, thus helping in the development and rehabilitation of an individual.

Dalin loads hay onto a work truck while completing his court ordered community serviceThe Phoenix Equine Rescue currently is involved with community organizations such as the 3b Detention Center, court ordered community service, at risk school students, and honor society members. On the weekends the youth come to the Phoenix Center to do barn chores and to interact with the horses. Their efforts teach them how to care for horses and give them an exposure to humanitarian work at an early age. Each volunteer is carefully coached and paired with an animal that will help them discover their inner strengths. If the child needs patience, they will be paired with a horse they need to have patience with. If they lack assertiveness, they will be paired with a horse that needs a strong leader. It is great to watch these kids grow in their self-confidence and sense of responsibility as they work with the horses; it is also rewarding to see the horses establish their trust in human beings as they bond with the children.

Mariah when she first came to the Phoenix CenterMariah, a 24 year old Tennessee Walker, is a great example of the impact the Phoenix Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Center can have. Mariah came to us from a home in which her elderly owners had grown incapable of caring for her. When she came to Phoenix, she was almost 300 pounds under weight.....every rib showed. She was restored to a healthy weight in a matter of months and nine months after coming to Phoenix she and her "human" took the Blue ribbon in the Bonneville Count Junior Showmanship competition, winning an appearance at the East Idaho State Fair. Without our intervention, Mariah probably would have been dead by fair time.

Mariah and David 2007 Bonneville County 4-H fairOur facility is also home to the Pheonix Phriends, a 4-H club whose main focus is on horses and showmanship. The Phoenix Center provides a horse to the member to care for and train for various shows. The leaders teach fundamental horse management and care. This all provides a strong knowledge base for when the member is able to own their own horse.

Our 1st Annual Horse Show and Open House was a great success and we look forward to this event becoming a growing tradition in the following years. Thank You to all those who attended, volunteered and donated to this event. And we want to give a great big Thank You to Darla Wyatt for her most generous donation and for all her time spent volunteering. It is amazing to see what we can do as a team!
